Sam Burgess, a former rugby league star, has been charged with traffic violations after being subjected to a random highway drug test in the South Highlands on Monday afternoon.

According to Cydonee Mardon of The Daily Telegraph, Burgess tested positive for cocaine on a roadside drug test.

New South Wales police confirmed in a statement that Burgess was charged with driving an unregistered car, along with other crimes.

“Hume Highway and Traffic Patrol officers were conducting traffic control duties on the Hume Expressway, Braemar, when they stopped a BMW X5 and spoke with the driver, a 32-year-old man,” the statement read.

“He was subjected to a random roadside drug test before being taken to the Southern Highlands Police Station, where he underwent a secondary oral fluid test. The sample was sent for further analysis.

“The man received a notice of court assistance for driving a vehicle, resident for more than three months, not obtaining a license and using an unregistered vehicle.”

Burgess is due to appear in Moss Vale Local Court on May 4.

Earlier this month, Burgess was found guilty of bullying his ex-wife’s father, Mitchell Hooke.

An “enraged” Burgess said he would “catch” his father-in-law during a fierce confrontation on a farm in the Southern Highlands, a court ruled.

The 2014 NRL player prime minister was convicted of bullying in Moss Vale Local Court on March 5 for arguing with Hooke, father of his ex-wife Phoebe Burgess.

He was sentenced to a two-year community correctional order with anger management support.

Outside of court, the winner of the prime minister in South Sydney told reporters that he was “confused” by the decision and that his legal team had already filed an appeal.

The Rabbitohs legend had pleaded not guilty to intimidation and an additional charge of common assault for the verbal confrontation with Hooke on his sprawling Glenquarry estate on October 19 last year.

The assault charge was dismissed.
