“This is the most important election we will face,” Collins told the Christchurch crowd.

“The biggest issue is New Zealand’s economic recovery. We are a small economy and we have to try harder than everyone else.”

He called National’s tax cut promise an “adrenaline pump at the heart of the economy.”

“We need to build for the future, not look back on the past.”

Ardern began by saying that it felt “as if a global pandemic was the last thing Canterbury needed.”

“You have shown the rest of the country what strength and unity is like.”

He said his government was “tough and early in our health response” to Covid “because we knew that would be good for the economy too.”

“I’m not claiming perfection, but you just have to look at the rest of the world.”

He said it was necessary to plan for the future.

“We must not waste hard-earned profits.”
