Wellington City Council contractors Fulton Hogan are assessing the situation to coordinate the removal. A spokesperson for the council suspected that the tree may have fallen due to a problem with the roots.
Onlookers from nearby cafes and shops had gathered to watch the commotion.
A Metlink spokesperson said buses traveling southbound at Lambton Quay will be diverted to nearby streets. Scheduled stops at David Jones will be missed.
