An annual school fundraiser turned into a tragedy this afternoon, with one person killed and 11 more injured, including one seriously.
Police have confirmed that one person was killed in an accident during the Lake to Sea Trail Ride event in Otago.
Emergency services responded to the accidents after two distress beacons were activated in the area around 12.10 p.m.
“Information from accident sites has been limited due to poor cell phone coverage in the area,” said a police statement.
“More information will be published as it becomes available.”
A spokeswoman for St. John confirmed that 11 people were injured.
One person was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in serious condition, while another was airlifted in moderate condition.
Another three in moderate condition were taken to the hospital in ambulances. One person was taken from the scene in a private vehicle with moderate injuries.
Five others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The St John spokeswoman said the notices were related to multiple accidents.
The 18th Lake to Sea Trail Ride is a popular fundraiser for Tokomairiro High School in Milton, about 30 miles south of Dunedin.
The 140km ATV and ATV trail runs from Milburn to the mouth of the Toko River, and back, through a mix of forest and farmland.
Social media posts after the fatal crash have said that there were also some “serious accidents” at last year’s event.
Organizers have been contacted for comment.
Marshalls had been stationed at crossroads and crossroads, event organizers said in pre-event briefing.
A “less challenging course” of about 80 km is available for less experienced cyclists, while cyclists under 12 must be accompanied on the course by a parent or guardian.
Hard hats and boots are required. The bikes must be mechanically safe, organizers say, with good tires and a 60km fuel range, plus a can to refuel at lunchtime. The scrutineers check the bicycles before going to the course.
The organizers try to vary the track every year, but they need the permission of several owners.
Today’s weather has seen a maximum of 16 ° C with light rain.
