Championship rival Josef Newgarden of the United States had cut Dixon’s series lead to 32 points after a double header in Indianapolis three weeks ago.

He put intense pressure on Dixon and won today’s race, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the New Zealander from claiming the title. He finished with 16 points of advantage over his main rival.

Dixon had led by as much as 117 points in the first part of the championship, but has finished outside of the top five in four consecutive races and has seen Newgarden consume his lead.

Dixon needed to finish ninth or better today to cement his sixth title – he secured third.

His compatriot Scott McLaughlin crashed less than half of his IndyCar debut.
