Dr. Alastair Coomer from Advanced Veterinary Care told 1 NEWS that the dog is in a “serious but stable condition.”
“He’s stable in the hospital, he’s comfortable, but he’s certainly not out of the woods,” he said.
The dog was shot after police confronted a gunman in Tangowahine, a small town about 12 kilometers northeast of Dargaville.
The man was shot by police, after which the couple were transported in separate helicopters to the Auckland region for treatment.
Coomer said his handler “was with him the entire time” after the incident.
“His handler never left,” he said. “He is here, arguable, more often than I am by his bed.”
No operations have been performed in the hospital at this stage, and vets are currently working to stabilize the dog.
Coomer said his injuries are “serious”, and the injuries are around his face and head.
The dog has a team of veterinarians and nurses who “work around the clock” to care for him, adding that “he has lost a lot of blood.” Staff are also working to make sure your airway isn’t blocked, allowing you to breathe and staying conscious.
“He has extensive wounds on his face, and most of them are no longer life threatening, but they will take some time and a little work to come out,” he said.

It is expected that “another 48 hours” will pass before the dog is stable enough for surgery.
“We have to take it hour by hour and then day by day and we are really excited about the first hour of your attention; I cannot emphasize enough, the attention it received in reaching us. It was excellent, so we are taking care of it hour after hour.
“I hope that tomorrow it will be in a more stable condition again and that its trend is going in the right direction.”
