A district court judge received “a volley of expletives” during the appearance of one of the men arrested after police discovered two firearms, methamphetamine and cannabis on a central Christchurch property.
James Brodie Young, 47, appeared in Christchurch District Court Monday via video link before Judge Tom Gilbert. Young has been charged with possession of methamphetamine for the supply and obstruction of a police officer in the line of duty.
Police were on alert Sunday after receiving a series of complaints about two late-model Mercedes cars allegedly driving dangerously and speeding, said Canterbury Subway Commander Superintendent Lane Todd.
One of the vehicles was seen in Tarras in Central Otago but did not stop when instructed to do so.

Todd said police had information suggesting both vehicles were traveling to Picton and that police from across the South Island were searching for the cars.
Both vehicles were located at a property on Bealey Ave in downtown Christchurch at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police searched the property and found two firearms and an undisclosed quantity of methamphetamine and cannabis.

An attorney on duty told the court that Young had refused to speak to her and that she was unable to follow his instructions.
When asked by Judge Gilbert why he was unwilling to speak to an attorney, Young erupted in what the judge described as “a barrage of expletives and general abuse.”
He said that he did not “know what was happening”, that he was being detained against his will and that “he had not consented to being in custody”. Calling the police “muppets,” Young denied the charges against him.
He then proceeded to kick and slam the door of the video link booth, at which point the judge requested that the video transmission be cut off.
Young has been placed on remand to reappear on Wednesday.
One of the prospects, a 32-year-old man, was arrested and charged with two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, breach of the conditions of a protection order, and breach of obligations in connection with a search for computer.
He is scheduled to appear in Christchurch District Court on Monday afternoon.
The other two men who were arrested are scheduled to appear Wednesday, a 33-year-old man charged with cannabis possession and a 37-year-old man charged with obstructing police.
More charges are being considered and both vehicles have been impounded, Todd said.
“The actions of these drivers caused great concern among members of the community, which led them to contact the police.
“Our staff worked diligently to locate these vehicles and their occupants, and we are pleased with the result,” he said.
