A sign warns of ouvea premix in the old Mataura paper factory building.

The removal of a hazardous substance from an old mill in Mataura is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Environmental Court Judge Laurie Newhook, in a record she issued on November 9, says constructive progress continues in planning for the removal of the ouvea premix from Mataura to an industrial site next week.

All of the ouvea premix is expected to be phased out by Christmas, Judge Newhook says.

Completion of the various necessary contracts is imminent, considerable progress has been made in the last week, and logistical arrangements for moving activities are now available.

In early September a court-assisted mediation took place in Invercargill between the Environmental Defense Society and New Zealand aluminum smelters.

The company filed a declaration procedure in the Christchurch Environmental Court in July on the storage of the premix, which is a class 6 hazardous substance that releases ammonia gas if it gets wet.

Procedures will determine if NZAS is responsible for disposing of the premix.

A new electronic conference will be held between the parties on Thursday.

All negotiations on the disposal of the substance are confidential to the parties involved.
