Jacinda Ardern pays tribute to Winston Peters

Jacinda Ardern says we must acknowledge the decades that Winston Peters has devoted to New Zealand politics.

The longtime MP is out of Parliament, after New Zealand First missed the five percent threshold and failed to win Northland.

Ardern says she would like to think that she has built a good relationship with Peters over the past three years and is very proud of what they accomplished together in government.

“Regardless of whether you were someone who supported him or not, he made a contribution to New Zealand politics.

“I, for one, was extremely proud of what we accomplished together in government, and I hope he is too.”

It could be a while before New Zealand First says where it is going.

The Party is a long way from the threshold for a seat on the list and a distant third in the Northland electorate.

Leader Winston Peters spoke briefly last night at party headquarters, but not to the media.

But Northland candidate, and now former MP, Shane Jones says they need time to reflect on the campaign.

He says it should be done with a cool head, not right away.
