Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern does not expect to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020, the winner of which will be announced after 10 p.m. Friday. Stuff will have a live broadcast of the announcement tonight.
Ardern was asked about the award while campaigning in Northland on Friday. She answered “no” when asked if she was optimistic about her chances.
“I’m extremely flattered that people even consider it within the realm of possibility, but it’s fair to say I’ve never done it,” she said.

Ardern is among the favorites for the peace award after being widely recognized for New Zealand’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Others at high risk this year include climate activist Greta Thunberg, the World Health Organization, broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, and Loujain al-Hathloul, who is an outspoken activist for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia and has been in prison since May 2018.

In total, 211 individuals and 107 organizations have been nominated for the award. Other prospects listed by gamblers include US President Donald Trump, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, Black Lives Matter and UNHCR.
Previous New Zealand Nobel Prize winners include Ernest Rutherford, who won the 1908 Chemistry Prize, for his work on the decay of elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances; Maurice Wilkins, who won the 1962 prize in physiology or medicine, for his contribution to the discovery of DNA; and Alan MacDiarmid, who won the 2000 chemistry award, for his contribution to the discovery and development of electronic conductive polymers.

Despite speculation about possible winners, the Nobel Committee does not release the names of the nominees.
“To the extent that certain names emerge in anticipated speculation as to who will receive the award for a given year, this is pure conjecture or information provided by the person or persons behind the nomination,” the committee said on its website.
The information in its database was not made public for 50 years.
Nominations for the Peace Prize in a given year must be made by February 1. During February and March a short list is drawn up, which generally includes 20-30 candidates.
A co-winner of the 2014 peace prize was Malala Yousafzai, who was just 15 years old when a member of the Taliban shot her in the head on a school bus in Pakistan.
Other winners of the peace prize include US Presidents Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Desmond Tutu, Lech Walesa, and Mother Teresa.
