Describing the Democratic victory as an opportunity to start over, Van Jones says the last few years had left groups “feeling like they couldn’t breathe.”
“It’s easier to be a parent this morning, it’s easier to be a parent,” he says.
“It’s easier to tell your kids that character is important. It matters. Telling the truth is important. Being a good person is important and easier for many people.”
As he spoke, Jones was overwhelmed with emotion, choking and crying live.
“It’s just a vindication for a lot of people who really suffered. You know, the ‘I can’t breathe’ thing wasn’t just George Floyd. That was a lot of people,” he says.
“You spend a lot of the energy in your life trying to hold it together, and this is very important for us to be able to just have some peace and restart.”
Joe Biden emerged victorious this morning after a victory in his hometown of Pennsylvania secured him with enough electoral college votes to claim the presidency.
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is the first woman to win the title, as well as the first person of color.
