A terrifying video has emerged of a father being hit in the face by a kangaroo while trying to protect his children from the marsupial.
The attack took place on Christmas Day at the Mitchell Robinson family home in South West Rocks, on the north coast of New South Wales.
The animal was prowling and digging holes on the property when Mitchell tried to move on.
The images show the father lifting something off the ground to scare away the large male kangaroo, but the moment he leaned over and threw the object at him, the animal reached over and headed towards him.
The “massive” marsupial can be seen punching Mitchell in the face and kicking him to the ground before quickly walking away.
Family friend Tina Grace Rowe said you could see the animal was going to come after him.
“I was just looking at him and he took something to try to chase him away and as soon as he did, you could see that he was going to go to him,” Rowe told 7 News.
“It was huge. It was a big male kangaroo, a big chest.”
The father was not seriously injured.
It comes as locals in South West Rocks say that kangaroos are becoming a problem in the area as more of them travel into town in search of food, as the wildfire crisis has destroyed their habitat.
NSW Environment and Heritage advises anyone who feels threatened by a kangaroo to move well away.
“Try not to attract the kangaroo’s attention and keep your head and arms low,” he states on his site.
“If necessary, carefully withdraw into a crouching or crawling position to a safe or remote location. If you can, place an object such as a tree or fence between you and the
babysitting and asking for help.
“If you are attacked, get down on the ground and make a ball with your hands protecting your face and throat. Try to stay calm and calm until the animal moves away, or if you can, stay low and move behind a form of cover “.
