The image of two penguins hugging while gazing at the Melbourne city lights has been awarded a superior photography award.
German photographer Tobias Baumgaertner captured the moment in 2019 after spending three nights in the Australian penguin colony.
“These two fairy penguins perched on a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were there for hours, fin at fin, staring at the bright lights of the horizon and the ocean,” he wrote on Instagram.

Although it’s a beautiful image, the photo has been somewhat controversial after Baumgaertner admitted that the relationship between the two penguins was unclear.
In his original post, Baumgaertner said that “a volunteer approached me and told me that the white woman was an old woman who had lost her partner and apparently so had the youngest man on the left. Since then they meet regularly to comfort each other and stand together for hours watching the dancing lights of the nearby city. “
But in a follow-up post, Baumgaertner admitted that his previous post had been “romanticized” and that the penguins could be related.
The photo, which has been widely used on social media since then, was named a winner at Oceanographic magazine’s Ocean Photograph Awards. Won the Community Choice Award.
