It’s one of the most recurring pranks in Scrubs’ nine years, but JD’s habit of yelling “EAGLE!” while spinning in the air it was never in the script.

Fans of the quirky comedy series, which ran from 2001 to 2010, will remember the first time it happened on screen, during the season 1 episode “My Hero.”

Brendan Fraser, who was the guest actor as Jordan Sullivan’s brother Ben, threw JD (played by Zach Braff) into the air as a little boy while cheerfully yelling “Eagle!” (The joke doesn’t really translate into an explainer, but trust us, it’s fun.)

He continued to do so several times throughout the show, with his best friend Turk (Donald Faison) doing the honors.

Faison and Braff revealed the titbit to news.com.au as they discussed the launch of their new podcast, Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach + Donald, which delves into all the juicy behind-the-scenes stories of the hit series.

“‘Eagle’ is a perfect example of Zach riffing on a line and it sticking: He had some really good moments that ended up being very popular moments on the show,” Faison said of his co-star, whom he also attributed to having coined. the nickname “chocolate bear” used repeatedly in the show.

“We never knew what the fans would love or respond to, but the fans just thought that (that joke) was so funny,” Braff explained. “Donald and I were traveling internationally and a girl, a young Israeli, sees me and says, ‘Eagle?’

“The best thing about Scrubs is that there was so much freedom to be silly, so everyone felt free to speak, there was no wrong answer. So when Brendan picked me up and started spinning me, I thought, JD is so nerdy I’d be like ‘no, no’ at first, but then I’d be thinking it’s like flying, like a ‘great eagle’ … And that’s what occurred to me in the brain. “

The Braff and Faison podcast is a veritable treasure trove of details previously unknown to Scrubs fans, but it also served as a useful review for the actors themselves.

Faison admitted on news.com.au that one of his recent podcasts had featured an episode that he had absolutely no recollection of filming.

“I literally didn’t remember the show, I didn’t remember the episode,” he said.

“That’s really cool: watching episodes and not remembering them, and you feel like you’re watching it for the first time … but there’s something so familiar about it.”

“I really enjoyed that I didn’t know what was coming next.”

Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach + Donald is now available to stream on the RNA iHeartPodcast via the iHeartRadio app, with each new installment focused on an episode of Scrubs and featuring behind-the-scenes stories and special guests.
