The first Dilworth School sex offender to be sentenced has been jailed for three years and seven months for indecently assaulting young children, some of whom for years.
Ian Robert Wilson, 69, of Maraetai, East Auckland, pleaded guilty to six counts of indecent assault of a child under the age of 16, one of committing an indecent act, which took place in the late 1970s and early 1970s. the 1980 one, and another in 1990.
He is the only man linked to Dilworth to admit his offense so far. Seven other men charged with indecency against children at Dilworth School are due to go to trial next year.
In sentencing in Auckland District Court, three victim impact statements were read, discussing the lifelong impacts of sex crime on abused men and their ability to trust and maintain relationships.
Judge Collins said Wilson’s offense was on children who were vulnerable in two respects: their age and their difficult family life, and subsequently had devastating effects on their lives.
One spoke of the suicidal thoughts he had afterwards and of the self-harm; others spoke of the immense problem they had in forming intimate relationships; excessive alcohol consumption; Marital Issues: Some issues continue to occur to this day, more than 40 years later.
Wilson was also revealed today as previously convicted of a similar crime in 1997 for committing an indecent act with a child under the age of 12, also in connection with the Dilworth School.
Previously the name of the sentence had been suppressed, which today was lifted by the judge and Wilson’s lawyer, Steve Cullen, did not object.
Both Crown and Cullen said that Wilson was truly sorry. He wrote a full apology to his victims, which was read by Cullen.
Cullen said Wilson was also a victim of sexual abuse as a child, from 9 to 12 or 13 years old.
The police investigation has reported more than 100 victims who were alumni of Dilworth, an Auckland boarding school for underprivileged children.
