I walk under the bridge closed until additional warning signs are installed

All vehicles will not be able to use a section of Humber St in Oamaru until proper warning signs can be installed.

It occurs when a man escaped without serious injury yesterday, after the car he was driving was crushed when a large truck rolled onto its side while passing under the railroad bridge yesterday.

The 43-year-old man who was driving the car escaped without serious injury, suffering a broken nose and several abrasions.

Waitaki District Council highways manager Mike Harrison said the additional height warning signs were not available at this time and therefore the street, from the railroad overpass, was temporarily closed.

“Therefore, for the immediate protection of all road and Kiwirail Bridge users, we will close Humber St at the railroad overpass, stopping all traffic until regulatory signage can be installed.”

The highway team was investigating the physical height warning controls, with visual and audible measurements as warnings.

“We have also reviewed the vehicle restrictions that can be enforced until they are operational.”

It was the third accident in the area in 18 months, and the height of the bridge had been inspected and revised to confirm the warning messages.

New signs were installed after the last incident six months ago, but it didn’t seem to be enough, he said.

Our thoughts are with the people involved in last night’s accident.

“These restrictions that are being applied now are to deploy all available resources in the hope that we can prevent this from happening again.”
