Hundreds of gang members in cars and motorcycles saying goodbye to a patched up gang member who died in an accident last weekend have wreaked havoc on Auckland’s roads today.
Video footage shows dozens of cars, some with people hanging from windows, and motorcycles passing an intersection on the North Shore.
Police say they are aware of the disruption in the local community by a large funeral procession involving gang members and were monitoring the situation.
Inspector Stefan McIntyre, Prevention Area Manager at Waitematā East, said police were monitoring the situation.
“The situation is being monitored by Eagle and by officials on the ground to ensure the safety of the public.
“Any violations are also being filmed and will be followed up,” McIntyre said.
The procession was to honor Tribesmen Merc Papa-Hugh Lei-Tama Maumasi-Rihari gang member who died while traveling with other gang members on SH1 in Canterbury last weekend.
The 21-year-old died after his bicycle collided with a car.
Video of the procession obtained by the Herald showed dozens of motorcyclists, cars and Utes participating.
Several people could be seen hanging from the windows of the vehicles as he made his way through the streets of the North Shore.
Earlier in the week, a family member of the dead gang member posted on social media about the procession, writing that no one should be “scared or scared.”
The family member also apologized for the traffic delays.
