The families were evacuated and smoke was billowing from a house in western Sydney this afternoon when emergency authorities issued an urgent alert and warned of the fire.

The threat comes as temperatures skyrocket in the capital of New South Wales and mercury is expected to exceed 40 ° C.

The NSW Rural Fire Service confirmed that there was a fire in the bush near Whitehaven Rd in Northmead, with water shelling operations attempting to contain the spread.

Television footage from ABC and Channel 7 shows at least one house affected by the fire, with multiple fire crews on the scene.

Residents are urged to avoid the area and watch out for embers that threaten to start a fire before the main fire.

The fire threat comes as Sydney residents endured the hottest November night since 1967, with no mercury sinking south of 25.3ºC.

“Last night’s low dropped to 25.3 degrees at Observatory Hill,” meteorologist Helen Kirkup told NCA NewsWire.

“Previously, the highest night temperature in November was 24.8 degrees, which was in 1967.”

For today, he said, the prediction was: “Just hot. Really hot.”

The warm northwesterly wind will linger and will likely cause the CBD to hit 40C and Penrith 42C.

It is expected that between 2pm and 5pm a cool south, which makes for a much more comfortable night.

Northeast New South Wales is also facing a sweltering day, with Grafton expected to hit 42 ° C and Taree 41 ° C.

With temperatures expected to remain very hot across the state in the coming days, NSW Health has urged people to cool their homes using fans, air conditioning, closed blinds, and told them to stay home.

“People going to the beach or pool should stay 1.5 meters from anyone other than their own home. To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the water and stay away from the heat, we encourage people to swim and go out, “Health said the department said in a statement.
