A “small group of whānau” refuse to help the police investigate the death of a 10-month-old baby in Manurewa.

Police investigating the murder of a 10-month-old baby are asking people to speak up.

It follows the death of a child on September 6 in Manurewa, in what police say was the result of non-accidental head injuries.

Manukau County Police say several family members do not cooperate with officers.

“There is a small group of whānau who choose not to cooperate with us as we investigate the death of this 10-month-old boy,” Detective Sergeant Major Kevin Tiernan said.

Police acknowledged that they had spoken to several other family members who had been working well with officers.

But Tiernan said it was disappointing that other family members weren’t.

“This is disappointing to the police and I urge anyone who is approached in this investigation to consider speaking with us so that we can establish what exactly happened,” he said.

Tiernan said they were committed to holding whoever was responsible for the baby’s death responsible.

Anyone with information should call the investigation team at (09) 261 1321, the police at 105 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at 0800 555111.
