The highway toll for the Christmas / New Years holiday period was four last year, but this year it has already hit eight, with one week left until this year’s break.
The toll rose to eight this afternoon after a person died in hospital after an accident in the Auckland suburb of Dairy Flat.
Another person died early this morning after a two-vehicle accident in Pahiatua near Palmerston North.
A man and a woman also died last night after being involved in an accident in Southland.
Just a few days ago, Inspector Jason Homan wrote an emotional letter to Kiwi drivers, pleading with them to take care of each other on New Zealand roads after the toll rose to four out of two fatal accidents in Auckland.

“Families of four have lost a loved one on the roads of Auckland since last night,” Homan wrote.
“Other crashes have caused serious injuries.
“Every death along the way means that a person will never return home to his whānau and friends.
“We don’t want any other family to experience so much pain and loss this holiday period.”
The toll period began on Christmas Eve and ends on January 5, 2021.
