Historic ‘haunted’ hotel closes after trade deal fails

The doors have been closed at Otago’s Vulcan Hotel for the first time in 140 years, after a trade deal fell through.

The hotel in the small town of St Bathans in Otago is famous for the spirit of a prostitute named The Rose, who was murdered in one of the rooms more than a century ago. –

Vulcan Hotel owner Jude Kavanagh closed the doors after a business deal fell through.

The building’s owner, Jude Kavanagh, told the Otago Daily Times a lease with the option to buy fell through three weeks ago.

“It’s really heartbreaking,” he said.

The hotel went up for sale due to her husband’s poor health nearly two years ago.
