An accident on the Appleby Expressway brought down a power line, but did not affect the power supply to homes and businesses.

Traffic was diverted for several hours after an accident on the main road between Nelson and Motueka.

Police said a car struck a power pole on SH60 Appleby Highway in the vicinity of O’Connor Rd Tuesday afternoon.

There were no serious injuries, police said.

The road was initially closed in both directions between River Road and Moutere Highway. Diversions were made as contractors worked to clear the road, which reopened shortly before 6 p.m.

Police warned motorists that they planned to use the route to delay travel, or drivers could take an alternate route along Waimea Rd West and Moutere Highway.

South Fenz Communications Shift Manager Jill Higgison said crews had responded to an incident involving a car hitting a power pole on State Highway 60 in Appleby near the intersection with River Rd.

The accident had caused extensive damage to the power pole, but Network Tasman operations manager Robert Derks said there were no power outages at homes or businesses.

“There are two feeders in the Mapua substation; the crash knocked out one of the feeders, but the other has taken over, so the power has been kept on; however, the pole will need to be replaced.”
