The Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) says it has received reports of people who have eaten fish from the prepared food service falling ill with histamine poisoning.
And three people went to the Hutt Valley DHB emergency department for medical attention after eating the fish.
Dr. Jay Harrower, a medical health officer, says symptoms are usually a combination of an allergic reaction and gastroenteritis.
Common symptoms of histamine poisoning include:
- Tingling and burning around the mouth
- Redness of the face
- Diarrhea
- Acne
- Nausea
- Abdominal cramps
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Palpitations
- Headaches
- Possibly shortness of breath
“Symptoms can last up to 48 hours, but they usually have no long-term effects. The illness usually begins between 30 minutes and an hour or two after consuming the fish,” says Dr. Harrower.
“There are some varieties of fish that are more likely to produce levels of histamine that are toxic, often when the fish is not kept cold.”
HelloFresh customers reported that they only received a refund for the cost of the fish, rather than the full meal.
“I think it’s terrible the way you reimburse just the product. The cost of the entire meal should be reimbursed at least for the inconvenience and as an apology. It’s not good enough,” commented one person on the Newshub Facebook page.
“Would you see a restaurant simply reimbursing the cost of the fish if you complained that it was not right?
“I think $ 30 for a night of pain is not enough!”
