Heavy rains are expected in the eastern and southern parts of the North Island starting this afternoon.
MetService warned that heavy rain could fall in Hawke’s Bay and southern Gisborne before 11pm tonight.
Up to 130mm of rain could cause surface flooding and driving hazards starting this afternoon, when rain rates could reach as high as 40mm / hr during thunderstorms.
“Another flurry of heavy rain is possible on Tuesday,” MetService warned.
Heavy rains and thunderstorms could hit the Tararua district between 9pm tonight and 7am tomorrow and could hit the Coromandel Peninsula between 6am and 6pm tomorrow.
Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa and the eastern hills of Wellington could see heavy rain between 11 a.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesday.
“A front in the eastern North Island should sink to the south today and tomorrow morning, causing heavy rains,” MetService said.
“On Tuesday, a low is forecast to continue east across the upper North Island, bringing rain to many places.”
