Destructive winds and heavy rain are forecast to hit the South Island and lower North Island starting tomorrow as a stormy front breaks through.

MetService has issued a high wind advisory for Canterbury High Country between 6:00 pm tomorrow and 9:00 am Wednesday.
Gusty winds could make driving dangerous, MetService warns, as well as potentially damaging trees, power lines and unsecured structures.
Meanwhile, heavy rains could cause problems in several areas, with up to 240mm of rain in Westland.
“Surface slipping and flooding is also possible and driving conditions can be dangerous,” says MetService.
The heavy rain advisory is in effect for Westland and southern Otira, the headwaters of the Caterbury lakes and rivers south of Arthurs Pass, the headwaters of the Otago and Fiordland lakes and rivers north of Breaksea Sound.
There are also heavy rain alerts for the Tararua Range, Mount Taranaki, Nelson, and Westland.
Meanwhile, there are strong wind alerts for Hawke’s Bay, Tararua District, Marlborough, Wairarapa and Wellington, Otago and Clutha, Southland, Stewart Island, and Fiordland Lakes.
Warnings and alerts start tomorrow morning and last until Wednesday morning.
