Heavy rain alerts will be in place for the west of the South Island starting tomorrow, and strong winds are also expected in the lower part of the North Island and most of the east of the South Island.

Metservice says several cold fronts, preceded by strong northwesterly winds, are forecast to follow the northeast across the South Island and the lower North Island from the Tasman Sea from today until early Tuesday.

The fronts are expected to bring periods of heavy rain in the Buller and Westland ranges north of Otira. Heavy rain alerts in the region are in effect from tomorrow afternoon until Tuesday night.

High wind alerts are in place in Marlborough starting tomorrow night, and Central Otago, Southern Lakes, Dunedin, Clutha, Southland and Stewart Island starting tomorrow morning.

The exposed regions of Canterbury High Country, Wellington and Wairarapa can expect strong wind gusts of up to 120 km / h.
