Gunmen kill TV host in eastern Afghanistan

Gunmen shot and killed a television host in eastern Afghanistan early Thursday morning (local time), authorities said.

The attackers opened fire on Malala Maiwand’s car shortly after she left her home in eastern Nangarhar province, said Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor.

No one has claimed responsibility, but an affiliate of the Islamic State is based in eastern Afghanistan and has claimed responsibility for most of the recent attacks on civilians in Afghanistan.

The Taliban also operate in the area.

In addition to working as a radio and television presenter, Maiwand was also an activist defending the rights of Afghan women and children.
