A youth was randomly attacked by a group of 10 youths in Gray Lynn yesterday.
The attack took place outside the Tiger Burger restaurant in a block of shops on Great North Rd at around 3.30pm.
A police spokeswoman said police received several calls about incidents involving several youths yesterday afternoon, including an incident in which a man was assaulted.
A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said an ambulance was dispatched to the scene and one person was treated for minor injuries.
It is understood that the youth group started a conversation with the victim outside of his work, and then he was assaulted without provocation. People from neighboring stores came to her aid.
Amir Mohammadi, owner of a Turkish kebab shop on the same block, said there were about 25 children in the group.
He did not witness any attacks, but said the group was causing chaos, abusing shop owners and people on the street.
“We were lucky we weren’t open yesterday, I think they would have attacked here too.”
Mohammadi said he tried to take a photo of the children from his car, but one of the group threw an object at him.
Police officers hit 10 youths near the Gray Lynn Park entrance on Williamson Ave, about 500 meters away.
No charges have been filed at this stage, the spokeswoman said.
A Williamson Ave resident said that some members of the group appeared to be as young as 10 years old, while others in the group appeared to be 16 or 17 years old.
“They left [Grey Lynn] park and then the police came. They all ran and dispersed, the police only captured some of them.
“They were giving the police a really hard time.”
