Google Duplex was unveiled in 2018 at the I / O conference where CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated that the service would make appointments without human interaction. He demonstrated this to the audience by making an appointment through technology. According to their demonstration, the technology could understand “um” and pauses that make machine-assisted communication more human-like. After the demo, the company posted a video showing the steps to reserve a restaurant seat through AI.
Initially, the technology was available in some states and there were concerns about its use. Stores and small businesses said the call would be made through the machine without informing them that their operator is talking to the machine, not a human.
However, Google tried to solve their problem and make it easier for companies to accept it, they are not very successful. Initially, the company used to reveal on the call that the machine is conversing by telling the listener that Google is on the phone and that the call will be recorded while giving companies the option not to record the call while talking to humans. However, companies have the opportunity to choose not to record the call. By choosing these options, the Google Assistant transfers the call to an unrecorded line. Right now, there are human listeners to the service who have been helping to improve the Duplex algorithm.
Google Duplex is available on Google Pixel devices and Android phones that have the version 5.0 operating system. The company has also said to launch Duplex on iPhones.
Duplex can be easily used. A person has to activate the Google Assistant, ask the assistant to reserve a seat. This will give you a list of cafes and restaurants and call the place of your choice. The machine will ask for the day, time and date and then the seat will be reserved.
