Kiwi golf legend Michael Campbell has finally gotten revenge on the post that criticized his victory at the 2005 US Open.
Campbell produced one of the most impressive surprises in golf when he beat Tiger Woods to win one of the important titles in golf.
But two years ago, E. Michael Johnson, Golf Digest’s team editor, placed Campbell at number one on his list of “most disappointing US Open winners in history.” Golf Digest tweeted the story again ahead of this year’s US Open on Winged Foot this week.
Campbell responded with a photo of the trophy with a handwritten sign that read “2005 Disappointed US Open Trophy.”
“I just made some adjustments to the trophy to correlate it with this disappointing story,” he wrote.
Johnson had highlighted Campbell’s lack of success before and after the tournament at Pinehurst, with the US Open being Wellingtonian’s PGA’s lone triumph.
On top of that, he condemned the effort with mild praise, stating that Campbell won “through a good game of his own and the collapse of others.”
It was not mentioned that the legendary Woods was the man trying to hunt down Campbell.
Campbell received a lot of support from his Twitter followers, with one of them saying, “I’d rather be a disappointed US Open champion than any day disappointing.”
But another calculated that he found it disappointing “because he could make a considerable amount of money if (Retief) Goosen had won.”
