Nineteen-year-old Taufateau, a promising rugby player and known for caring for everyone around him, was hit in an unprovoked attack on Oxford Terrace around 1 a.m. Sunday. He fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement, knocking him unconscious.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by a member or associate of the mestizo mafia.

His close friend Eddie Sunia received a call shortly after the incident and went straight to the hospital for the night. There, he found Taufateau in a coma with a fractured skull.

“I was so devastated at the time, so hurt,” he said.

“I kept talking to him and I kept saying, ‘Hey, come back. I’m not ready to lose you. ‘

Sunia said she had a question for the attacker: “I’d love to say, ‘Hey bro, why, why? Can you explain why? ‘”

Taufateau is now awake and talking a bit, but his recovery can be long.

Prebbleton Rugby Club president Jeremy Knowler said that Taufateau, known to many as ‘Rocky’, was a “gentle giant” and a favorite at the club.

“He’s a big boy, but he’s just a lovely boy.”

Knowler said he was struggling to understand the attack.

“It wasn’t really very good. It was quite shocking to watch, disturbing. For someone to do that, it just doesn’t make sense to me. “

Taufateau moved to Christchurch from Tonga on a rugby scholarship to St Thomas of Canterbury College, leaving his family to follow his dreams.

Police investigators said there had been a strong public response since CCTV and cell phone images of the attack and the alleged perpetrator were distributed.

With clear images in the public, the police believe that many people know the identity of the alleged attacker and must now be protecting him.

Police know that the offender is a member or associate of the Mongrel Mob due to the group of people he was with, the colors he was wearing and the descriptions of the witnesses.

Investigators are following various leads in hopes of identifying the attacker.
