Two people were seriously injured and four moderately injured in an accident on Roberts Line, Palmerston North, on Wednesday.
Screams echoed off a suburban highway as a minivan and truck crashed in Palmerston North.
A PTS truck and minivan collided, the impact rupturing the truck’s fuel tank and drenching Kelvin Grove’s Roberts line in diesel just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The minivan, containing two adults and four children, skidded to a stop across the road between Angelina Way and Parnell Heights Drive, next to the Frederick Krull Preserve.
Three people were seriously injured, one sustained moderate injuries and two suffered minor injuries, a St John spokesperson said. All were transferred to Palmerston North Hospital.

Police investigators examine the crash site and take pictures of the scene to reconstruct the cause of the collision.
Neighbors came to the aid of the passengers, providing blankets for the five people who had escaped from the minivan while the trapped driver screamed in pain, a witness at the scene said.
A nurse who passed the accident took control of the scene and assisted the injured passengers, said Fire and Emergency Station Officer Shane Betts.
She was comprehensive in evaluating and calming the driver, who was heavily trapped, when emergency services rushed to the site, Betts said.
“It was very helpful to us that people came and helped. We are very grateful for that. “
Firefighters worked to free the driver, ripping the roof off the car to get her out just before 2 p.m., Betts said.
“Being a minivan, it was quite complex because of the two sliding doors and the roof was quite difficult to remove.”
Blood could be seen dripping down the minivan and splattered on the concrete next to the debris. A child safety seat was in the back of the car.
Betts was told that the ages of the children involved ranged from a toddler to pre-teens.

The driver of this minivan was trapped after a truck crashed. They were released shortly before 2 PM and taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
It was too early to say what caused the accident, but the police major accident unit and the commercial vehicle safety team were launching investigations, Sgt. Kaine Austin said.
Mike Sahayam of the Palmerston North City Council was called in to help with the diesel that had spilled onto the road.
He was surprised that everyone escaped the accident alive.
“It is amazing that there were no fatalities.”
The road was closed for a time between Peppertree Glade and Parnell Heights Drive.
