Crews extinguished a fire near Otatara, west of Invercargill, after several cars caught fire this afternoon.
Two Invercargill fire engines and a water tanker were called into the incident shortly after 12:30 p.m., a New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said.
It was understood that four cars were involved and crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the blaze.
The fire occurred at Invercargill Tractor Servicing and Repair on Otatara Rd.
Firefighters juggled tending to the scene as they directed a small number of vehicles through the lane closure.
A neighbor in the area said she was surprised when she stopped at her home to see fire trucks on the street.
“I hadn’t heard anything about it, I just stopped and saw [emergency services and road blocks]. “
Fenz Station Senior Officer John Gilder said the business owner was absent at the time of the fire and no one was on the property when it started.
It was only when a customer came to pick up their tractor that they noticed the flames and called 111.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, four cars were on fire and several tractor tires had been engulfed in flames, he said.
Mr. Gilder said it was “pretty quick” to put out the fire and it only took about 10 minutes.
However, all four cars would definitely be canceled, he said.
The investigation would continue as it was not yet clear what caused the fire.
