Four people were arrested after a man was stabbed and seriously injured in Christchurch.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to an address on Hei Hei Rd around 12:25 p.m., following a report of an assault. Later, police said they called a man who had been found with stab wounds.

A spokesperson for St John said the person was seriously injured.

On Friday night, police said the man was stable.

Three men, ages 44, 23 and 19, along with a 40-year-old woman, are due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Saturday.

Police were not looking for anyone else, but asked to hear from everyone who witnessed the stabbing.

Earlier on Friday, a staff member at St Bernadette’s School on Hei Hei Rd confirmed that the school was closed but declined to comment further.

Ramanie Weerasinghe, 63, showed up just before 2 p.m. to pick up her 7-year-old granddaughter, but found both ends of the road closed.

Shortly after she left, another parent, who declined to comment, appeared, but left after speaking to police at the scene.

One resident, who lived near the site but declined to give her name, said she was watching coverage of the US elections when she saw flashing lights through a window.

“I thought they had pulled someone over and then I looked outside and there were more cars,” he said.

He thought he saw four policemen carrying weapons.

“Fortunately, all my doors were closed,” said the resident. She said a police officer told her “not to worry because everything was safe.”
