A former Upper Hutt school teacher was named the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident last week.
Rachel Pawsey, 30, was killed in an accident between her motorcycle and a car on Thursday.
This week a tribute to Pawsey was posted on Upper Hutt College’s Facebook page, saying that staff and students were “devastated” to learn of the death of the “much loved” former teacher.
Pawsey taught at the school from mid-2016 to late 2019, managing physical education, health, and outdoor education.
“She was an excellent teacher, excellent in the classroom, unfailingly positive and a role model for her classes,” the publication said.
“Rachel was adventurous and loved sharing her outdoor experience with her students. Many will have special memories of Rachel encouraging them to take a chance and overcome their fears and uncertainties while hiking, camping, abseiling, jumping rope or kayaking. “
Pawsey dropped out of school late last year to go abroad and was on her way to a teaching position in Italy when the pandemic struck. She returned home to stay with her family in Auckland for the confinement.
“He then returned to Upper Hutt and was looking to teach again in the Wellington area.
“Rachel was kind, positive, energetic and always smiling, a much loved and admired colleague and friend. She will be remembered as a teacher who inspired and fostered a love of the outdoors in her students and we will all miss her. Our deepest condolences, thoughts and aroha go to Rachel’s parents, family and everyone who knew and loved her. “
Caring comments from family and friends have also been shared on Facebook for Pawsey.
“Such a beautiful person inside and out gave generously in knowledge and kindness at the Onslow pony club … she will live on the kindness of those who were lucky enough to know her,” wrote one person.
“Rachel was one of the kindest souls who always made you feel welcome,” said another.
Others expressed grief at the “terrible loss of a beautiful life.”
The accident happened around 8:30 pm Thursday, on SH2 in Moonshine Valley.
A police spokeswoman said investigations into the circumstances of the accident are still continuing.
