Forecast of heavy rains and thunderstorms for much of New Zealand

Tourists in most parts of the country may have to head inland today, with thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Heavy local rains are expected in Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula, eastern Waikato and Taupō, while significant rains are forecast for the southern areas of the South Island.

MetService has issued a heavy rain advisory for North Otago, Dunedin and Clutha from Balclutha heading north until 3am tomorrow. He said up to 100mm more rain could fall, in addition to what has already fallen in the area.

He warned that it could cause flooding and rapidly growing rivers, surface flooding and landslides.

NIWA has warned campers and travelers to be aware of changing conditions and localized flooding.
