Environment Southland has issued a flood warning due to heavy rains that have caused some rivers in the region to start rising.

“After a period of heavy rain last night and this morning, several rivers have started to rise, so we have activated the flood warning on our website,” he reported today.

Rain has stopped in the west, but there was still some rain affecting the northern and eastern headwaters of Southland, he said.

MetService said the rain in Southland was expected to clear up in the morning and good morning increases.

Environment Southland reports the following information about the river at 9:54 a.m. M. From today:

The Waikaia River at Piano Flat was 1.82 m above normal and was falling 124 mm / hour.

The Oreti River on the Lumsden cable car was 2.35m above normal and rising 209mm / hour.

The Irthing Stream on Ellis Rd was 1.69m above normal and rising 236mm / hour.

The Winton Dam at Winton Dam (Benmore) was 2.17 m above normal and constant.

The Makarewa River at Counsell Rd was 2.15 m above normal and rising 319 mm / hour.

The Otautau Current in Otautau was 1.64 m above normal and rising 45 mm / hour.

The Waiau River Fishing Camp Rd was 0.38m above normal and rising 308mm / hour.

The Te Waewae Lagoon on the Waiau River was 1.32 m above normal and rising 308 mm / hour.

Cooler weather to come

Further north, the weather will cool down in Canterbury today as tourists travel back home.

Metservice forecasts a high of 19 ° C in Garden City with a low of 7 ° C.

The rain is expected to develop this morning with cool southwesterly winds throughout the day.

The total rainfall forecast for today is 4.6mm.

There is also a heavy rain warning in parts of Canterbury.

The warning is for the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers south of Arthurs Pass between 8 am and 8 pm today.

“Another 100-150mm is expected to accumulate around the main split, and 50-75mm within 15km further east. Peak intensities of 10-20mm per hour are possible this morning,” said the warning.

The cooler weather is coming from a front, preceded by strong and humid northwesterly winds, which is hovering over the South Island and is expected to move north today.
