A two-car accident at the intersection of Appleby Highway and Blackbyre Rd resulted in two people being taken to the hospital.

A collision between two vehicles on the Appleby Expressway, near Nelson, left five people injured and one was taken to hospital in serious condition.

A police spokeswoman said police were notified of the accident between two vehicles at the intersection of Blackbyre Rd and Appleby Highway around 4:10 p.m. Saturday.

It is understood that initially a person was trapped in a vehicle.

After the accident, State Highway 60 was left in a lane with a detour between the highway and Lansdowne Rd.

A spokeswoman for St John said two people were taken to Nelson Hospital, one in serious condition and the other in moderate condition. Three others were evaluated and treated on the spot.
