Hamilton firefighters praise the “heroic actions” of a former firefighter, saying they saved the lives of two people after a car crashed and caught fire.

The emergency services were called to the accident on Kahikatea Dr at the Tawa St intersection in Melville just after 6 am.

A car hit a power pole and then caught fire, said northern communications and fire shift manager Colin Underdown.

In a social media post, Hamilton firefighters praised the “heroic actions” of one of his former firefighters who was at the scene of the accident.

“Due to those actions, the lives of two people were saved after a major car accident in downtown Hamilton.”

They had all got out of the car when the Hamilton firefighters arrived, Underdown said, but the car was engulfed in flames.

A person has critical injuries. Two others have been seriously injured.

Hamilton police were on site and diverting traffic from the area, said Sergeant Major Wayne Shanks.

Anyone traveling in that direction was asked to avoid the area, he said.

The Police Serious Accident Unit is on the scene.
