Some residents are returning to their homes today after 100 properties were evacuated yesterday due to a fire in Ahipara in Northland.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) says 40 firefighters and six helicopters are at the scene of the fire.

No structure was lost overnight and early indications show “great progress” has been made, FENZ said.
Yesterday 100 properties were evacuated. FENZ says there were no more evacuations during the night.
“We are now at a point where residents of Foreshore Rd up to and including Tasman Heights can return to their homes, provided they are ready to evacuate if the situation changes,” Incident Controller Rory Renwick said in a statement around at 11.30. i am today.
“For the other residents, primarily those on Reef View Road, we will continue to check the areas around their homes and let them in, when it is safe to do so.”

The fire broke out yesterday afternoon and grew to 1 km by 1 km in size. Crews were called to the fire, which started at the Ahipara Gumfields Historic Reserve, at 5:45 p.m.
