An apartment was badly damaged after a fire started in the early hours of Saturday.

A person is in hospital after a major fire in an apartment building in Queenstown.

The fire service was called for the first time at 2 a.m. Saturday, with a report of a burning three-story apartment building on Huff St.

Southern Fire Communications shift manager Brett Dunn said the fire was “on fire” when crews arrived and more resources were requested.

All the people were accounted for, but one person was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

About 25 firefighters from Queenstown Frankton, Arrowtown, Cromwell and Alexandra fought the blaze, Dunn said.

Around 4:20 a.m. M., The fire was under control.

Queenstown Station Senior Officer Dave Christie said Stuff that there were more than 10 people at the scene who had managed to get out of the apartment building, with only one person taken to the hospital.

A firefighter also needed medical treatment after a minor hand injury, but they were fine, he said.

There were still three fire crews on site as of 7:30 am A fire safety inspector is on site.
