In a statement, PTA President Lynne Johnston said her focus was to support the family and those affected by the tragic accident.
“Our hearts go out to this man’s family and friends as they face the loss of their husband, father, colleague and friend,” she said.
The 140-kilometer track was designed to accommodate a variety of riding levels with sections for young riders and others for experienced riders, Johnston said.
“Two other cyclists had to be airlifted due to the remoteness with injuries; both were the result of single bicycle accidents. Other injuries treated ranged from a broken collarbone to a sprained wrist and cuts and scrapes.
“The Tokomairiro High School PTA community thanks all members of the community for their support of this event, St John’s for their tireless work and the rescue helicopter and police for dealing with this sad situation.”
Further inquiries were made to the police.
Clutha District Mayor Bryan Cadogan said it was terrible that a long-running motorcycle fundraiser ended in tragedy.
“It is a devastating event that will have impacted everyone. Now, obviously, it will be a moment of mourning,” he said.
“There is real positivity in Milton and having a tragedy like this is the most upsetting thing for a close-knit community, and like all of Milton, my thoughts are with family and friends who are directly affected.”
Emergency services responded to the accidents after two distress beacons were activated in the area around 12:10 p.m.
The Serious Accident Unit attended and examined the scenes.
The death has been referred to the coroner and the circumstances of the accidents are being investigated.
In a post on the Lake to the Sea Trail Ride Facebook page, participants were urged to ensure their bikes and gear were fit for purpose.
Helmets, gloves and good boots were mandatory.
The publication said organizers tried to vary the track every year, but relied on the owner’s permission. The tracks were divided into three options: a 40km junior race, a senior track and one for advanced riders.
The journey began on Narrowdale Road, next to the Toko Golf Course.
