A man who lives next door to a unit where a person died in a fire on Friday knocked on the door to try to wake them up, but to no avail.
Emergency services were called to the fire on Mulgan St in Auckland’s New Windsor at around 5.43am on Friday.
The fire has since been extinguished, but one person died in the fire, police said.

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ investigators were on the scene to establish what caused the fire.
“No further details about the deceased can be provided until formal identification and family notifications have been made,” police said.
The affected property is in the middle of a building containing three Kāinga Ora units. Its roof is very charred.
Mt Roskill Station Officer Mike Candy said night shift crews and three fire trucks were dispatched to the fire.
No one else was injured in the fire, which has since gone out, he added.
“The fire walls between the buildings have done a very good job of keeping the other units safe and the people in those units have escaped safely.”
Fire investigators are likely to remain at the scene the rest of the day.
Candy did not want to speculate on the cause of the fire.
Farah Farah, who lives in one of the adjoining units, said she heard the fire alarm when she got up for her morning prayers.
“I heard the sound of the alarm. I went outside. I didn’t see smoke or fire, but I heard the alarm. “
He said the alarm kept going off, so he tried to wake the occupant by knocking on the door, but to no avail.
“I saw flames through the window, so I went to get a hose and tried to spray.
“The other neighbors were telling me to leave. I was spraying the ceiling and calling 111. “
An electrician from Kāinga Ora who was on site to isolate the power said residents of the other units would need to be relocated.
Farah would be housed in alternative housing until it was safe for him to return home.
