Fatal dog attack: mother of murdered baby wishes she could go back in time

The mother of a newborn baby who suffered fatal injuries when attacked by the family dog ​​says she wishes she could go back in time.

The young mother, from Hamilton, has posted a moving message online; acknowledging his devastating loss and the events of the last days.

Sharing a photo of herself relaxing outside on a sunny day, sitting on the grass and looking out over a river, she shared the words:

“If only I could go back to this day with (you) still in my stomach, my son.”

He ended the sentence with a sad face.

Close friends and family have offered their condolences and support to the young woman.

One wrote: “I have no words, my friend. We are all trying to bear your loss for you, but I guess you won’t even feel it because the weight is so heavy.

“We love you … and we have you. Hold on and breathe.”

The young mother also shared a photo of her little boy, who is said to be less than a day old when the attack occurred Sunday night.

Police confirmed yesterday that the baby had died overnight after initially being taken to Waikato Hospital in critical condition.

Emergency services were called to a suburban Enderley home around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses describe heartbreaking scenes

Police later confirmed that a dog had bitten a baby.

Neighbors who rushed to help the mother and her baby have described disturbing scenes; with a woman telling Stuff that it appeared the animal had tried to bury the baby after attacking him.

Two brothers, Takilesi and Junior Afamasaga, told Newshub yesterday that they ran after hearing the woman’s cries for help and were unprepared for the scene in front of them.

“[She] I was just trying to keep the baby awake, trying to keep him crying.

“She asked me for a cloth, so I took off the hoodie and gave it to her directly,” said one of the brothers.

It is understood that the young mother was in the bathroom when the incident occurred.

The child’s death has been referred to a forensic doctor.
