One person is dead and two are seriously injured after a traffic accident on State Highway 27 on the North Island.

The single-vehicle accident occurred near Mangatarata on the Hauraki Plains shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Two Ngatea fire teams assisted in the accident, said Craig Dally, Fire and Emergency shift manager.

Jeff Penno, Waikato Road Surveillance Manager, the accident occurred between Torehape Road East and Mahuta Road South.

Before the accident, police traveling in the opposite direction were alerted to the vehicle due to how it was driving. The policemen turned around with the intention of stopping the vehicle.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle, but it was found crashed out of the way.

The person died at the scene.

The Serious Accident Unit attended and SH27 between Torehape Road East and Mahuta Road South was to be closed for several hours.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
