The Southland man, Lochie Bellerby, was one of 43 people aboard the Gulf Livestock 1 that left Napier, bound for China with 5,800 cows on board. He sent out a call for help last Wednesday when Typhoon Maysak hit the area with strong winds and storm surge. The ship later sank.

So far, the Japanese Coast Guard has only found two survivors, which it continues to search by boat and plane. A third person was found dead.

Today, a spokesperson for Bellerby’s family told 1 NEWS that the search should be resumed as there is a possibility that he is still alive.

“With the new information received today (from the second survivor, Australian contacts and marine specialists) and four missing life rafts, the warm weather conditions and the presence of several islands near where the ship sank, it is possible that survivors can still be found. .

“Therefore, the family agrees with the public call for New Zealand and Australia to support the Japanese, to the extent possible, to restart the search immediately.”

On Wednesday, new footage surfaced aboard the ill-fated Gulf Livestock 1, before the cattle ship sank off the coast of Japan.

Images taken by one of the Australian crew members the day before the ship’s disappearance show water filling the ship’s decks.

Karen Adrian, the mother of Scott Harris, a 37-year-old man from Manawatū, says her son can be seen in the pictures “looking in awe”.

Her son had sent her an earlier message saying, “They haven’t allowed us to leave for 12 hours.”

“At least two covers completely razed,” read his message.

“Twenty degree inclinations … I have no idea the size of the swell, yesterday morning it was 12 feet.”

Adrian shared the video and the messages with 1 NEWS.
