A boy was celebrating Father’s Day with his family when he fell up to 30 meters down a hill near Kaikōura.

Sebastian Frost, 13, was taken to Kaikōura after the incident on Factory Rd in Hāpuku around 2.15pm on September 6, but later died. His death has been referred to the coroner.

On Thursday, Frost’s mother, Jessica Frost, said Stuff in a statement, the family was “completely heartbroken.”

“We are extremely grateful for the time we were able to spend with him and the overwhelmingly positive influence he had on us and others.”

Sebastian had a “big smile” for everyone he met and was loved by many, he said.

“Family meant absolutely everything to him. He had a very special bond with his younger sister Annie, whom he adored. She was more than a sister to him, she was his best friend.

“We loved his curiosity about life, his humor and loyalty, his integrity. We will deeply miss her kind, constant and loving presence. “

Frost said her son’s death was a “tragic, tragic accident.”

Frost said the family, including Sebastian’s father Greg and his 10-year-old sister, had been overwhelmed by the “incredible kindness,” the aroha, and the generosity of friends, family, and the Kaikōura community at large.

“It is further proof of the way our bright-eyed, kind-hearted beloved lived his short life.”

Factory Rd is a gravel road along State Highway 1, north of Kaikōura. It is straight for about 500 meters before descending a steep and bushy face towards houses and pastures at sea level.

At the corner of the road, before your descent begins, duct tape is placed between trees at an opening in the bush up a steep slope, which is understood to be the site of the incident.

Hāpuku is a coastal settlement of about 50 people, 10 km north of Kaikōura.

Suburban School Principal Mandy Woods said Sebastian’s death was a “great loss” for her school, the Kaikōura District High School and the community.

“Our condolences to the family.”

Police called the death a “tragic accident” but declined to comment further.
