Fire crews responded today to a fire on a ship in Napier Harbor that saw thick black smoke in the surrounding area.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they were called to the fire at 10:45 am It has since been brought under control.
“Fire crews continue to cool the ship. We are working with the ship’s captain and engineer,” Fire and Emergency New Zealand said in a statement this afternoon.

Previously, they said there were 11 fire crews fighting the blaze at 4 Wharf.
“People are asked to stay away from the area so that emergency services can work,” Fire and Emergency said.
“There is a lot of smoke around. If you are affected, close the windows. Contact Healthline if you need medical advice.”
The port of Napier said in a statement that the ship’s crew is within 14 days of isolation from Covid-19 and has been transferred to another separate facility in the port.
They say that everyone is safe and numbered.
Doctor Nick Jones, a medical health officer, says the crew, who had come from China, had been at sea for 17 days, so the risk was low.
They would be tested today as a precautionary measure.
Explosions could be heard coming from the ship as 1 NEWS’s Sean Hogan delivered his noon report.
A resident told 1 NEWS that he heard the original loud explosion and then ran off to look.
“It smells of fireworks and sulfur,” he said, donning a mask for health reasons.
The municipality of Ahuriri has been evacuated due to the fumes heading towards it.
Meanwhile, a port worker on another ship at the time told 1 NEWS that she was concerned about her ship, and a man from a dry food company watched the ship go up in smoke with her $ 5 million freezer at board.
