Police are looking for criminal John-Boy Rakete.

His victim died 14 months after a brutal assault on a gas station, and now John-Boy Rakete is on the run.

Police issued a sighting request for the 27-year-old, who is believed to have cut off his electronically monitored ankle bracelet Sunday morning.

Rakete, who should not be contacted, could be in Auckland, police said.

The Mongrel Mob member made headlines after the assault on the Mobil Forbury esplanade, Dunedin, on July 7, 2018.

Rakete stopped people from giving the victim first aid and then threw a can of drink in his face as he lay unconscious.

Rakete was arrested for the attack and charged with causing serious bodily harm with reckless indifference.

He was later imprisoned for two years and two months.

Landreth, who remained in hospital after the attack, then deteriorated and died on September 22, 2019, about 14 months after the attack.

Rakete could not be charged with Landreth’s death because he died after the one-year limit and a day when someone could be held criminally liable for the murder of another.

Since then, the corresponding section of the Crimes Law has been repealed, but on Thursday politicians repealed a bill that would have faced offenders of the king’s coups that caused their death to a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Landreth’s sister had campaigned for Rakete’s imminent release, and the offender had a legal release date of September 10, 2020.

A report from the Board of Parole shows that electronic monitoring was part of Rakete’s release conditions.

A Corrections spokeswoman said Things Police were informed immediately after Rakete violated his probation conditions and escaped from the Dunedin address on Sunday morning.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the police on 111 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
