The grassy beds of Lake Wānaka took on a whole new meaning yesterday, when a caravan appeared on the pontoon at Glendhu Bay Motor Camp with a patch of greenery alongside.
Manager Phil Hunt said the former staff caravan was moved to the pontoon “because of a joke.”
The “lawn” had originally been a section of synthetic cover for tennis courts and was salvaged from the trash.
The caravan contained a bed.
His son and partner would use it overnight, Hunt said, and today they were moving a hot tub to the pontoon and holding a barbecue.
Hunt said the pontoon had been extremely popular with kids during the summer, with 102 people on it at one time.
Unlike many other lodging providers, Glendhu Bay Motor Camp had its best summer in years.
Today, another large influx of competitors was expected to arrive for the Challenge Wānaka Half, Hunt said.
